„Snow White and the Seven dwarfs” is the next premiere of OCC, directed by Corina Dumitrescu. The show has two ballet dancers for the role of „Snow White”: Emily Hulme and Emily Fung.
Why did you choose the OCC?
Emily Hulme: OCC was one of the first companies I auditioned for while I was in my last year at school. I was really impressed by the building and the theatre especially. Although it was a bit daunting that they mainly speak Romanian, I was interested to move to another country and try to learn a new language. On the day of the audition when they offered me the contract, I watched a rehearsal of ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ and was impressed by the professionalism of the whole production.
Emily Fung: I chose OCC because when I first came here to audition in January last year, the artistic staff were very welcoming and there was a friendly atmosphere among the company dancers. It made me want to become a part of the family.
How is to be ,,Snow white’’?
Emily Hulme: Being Snow White has been an amazing experience for me as it is my first principal role. Corina Dumitrescu is brilliant to work with and has inspired and improved not only my performance but also how I dance even in the class. It has been a beneficial experience to have all the additional rehearsals and demands for the role as it has challenged both my physical and mental strength, and has made me better as a dancer. It is a lovely role to dance and I enjoy the freedom that it gives me to express the character in my own way and put a little of my own interpretation into my performance.
Emily Fung: I am very excited and grateful to have the chance to portray „Snow White”. There are some challenging parts in the choreography itself, but I also had to pay additional attention to the characteristic of my role. For example, the arms movements have to be soft and gentle, as the character is kind and innocent.
What relationship do you have with the OCC team?
Emily Hulme: For me I feel that OCC is a really lovely company because it is like one big family. Everyone in the different departments is working hard to make sure the productions are the best that they can be, and it creates a sense of unity that I think is very special. Naturally I know the ballet department the best, and my colleagues have always been helpful with translating in rehearsals, but also just making the international dancers feel welcomed into the company. The staff as well get along with all the dancers, and there isn’t a separation or hierarchy, everyone is equal and everyone’s questions and opinions are welcome. This is my first job after graduating and I wasn’t expecting it to be anywhere near as inclusive as I have found it to be, which makes it even more enjoyable.
Emily Fung: Everyone in OCC is very supportive and helpful. They would try their best to help me out if I had any problems or inquiries. We are like a family.
